About the Project

Project Protect Himalayas is part of SankalpTaru's Sustainable Agroforestry category, aimed at

strengthening agriculture and enhancing farmer livelihoods in Uttarakhand. Residents of Uttarakhand are already experiencing the far-reaching impacts of climate change — including changing temperatures, upward-moving snowlines, receding glaciers, erratic rainfall, reduced winter snowfall, shifted cropping seasons, changing cultivation zones, and the drying up of perennial streams, as noted in the state government's action plan on climate change (SAPCC). SankalpTaru introduced Project Protect Himalayas to prevent the migration of local farmers caused by these adverse climate impacts, by supporting them with agroforestry and planting fruit-bearing trees to stabilize their livelihoods while protecting the ecosystem of the majestic Himalayas.

Planted across farmlands and community landscapes in Uttarakhand, this initiative promotes biodiversity while integrating an extensive range of tree-based solutions into the mountain farming systems of the Himalayan region.

Through this initiative, agroforestry-based ecosystems deliver:

  • Strengthened Agriculture: Integrates a diverse range of fruit-bearing and timber trees with mountain farming to enhance productivity across shifting cultivation zones
  • Enhanced Farmer Livelihoods: Diversified income through high-value mountain fruits, nuts, and timber species stabilizes livelihoods and prevents climate-induced farmer migration
  • Soil & Water Conservation: Improves soil fertility, prevents erosion on mountain slopes, and supports the recharge of perennial streams drying due to glacial retreat
  • Biodiversity Promotion: Encourages ecological balance by supporting a rich diversity of native Himalayan flora and fauna across fragile mountain ecosystems
  • Climate Resilience: Helps Himalayan farms adapt to accelerating climate change and improves carbon absorption to protect the majestic Himalayan ecosystem

By supporting Project Protect Himalayas, you contribute to building resilient farming systems that empower farmers while restoring ecological balance in Uttarakhand.

Q: What is this project?

A: A SankalpTaru initiative that plants fruit-bearing trees on farmers' fields to restore livelihoods and biodiversity in the region.

Q: Where are trees planted?

A: Across farmer-partnered agroforestry land and community landscapes in the designated state, selected for ecological suitability.

Q: How is tree survival tracked?

A: Every tree is GPS-tagged, photographed, and monitored through periodic field visits and digital reporting by our on-ground teams.

Q: Do I get a certificate?

A: Yes, a personalised CerTreeficate is sent immediately after your contribution. Plant images with GPS coordinates are emailed within 48 hours of planting.

Q: Is it tax-exempt under 80G?

A: Yes, every donation receives a valid 80G tax receipt under the Indian Income Tax Act (PAN card details required).
