About the Project
Project Green Leh Ladakh is part of SankalpTaru's Sustainable Agroforestry category, aimed at
strengthening agriculture and enhancing farmer livelihoods in Leh Ladakh. What began as a mission to support a handful of farmer beneficiaries through agroforestry has slowly grown into a transformative movement of creating Apple Villages across the region. By planting fruit-bearing trees for local farmers, this initiative helps expand the vision of Apple Villages to a wider scale — bringing sustainable livelihoods, green cover, and ecological renewal to one of India's most unique and challenging landscapes.
Planted across farmlands and community landscapes in Leh Ladakh, this initiative promotes biodiversity while integrating cold-climate fruit-bearing tree solutions into the traditional farming systems of the region.
Through this initiative, agroforestry-based ecosystems deliver:
- Strengthened Agriculture: Integrates cold-climate fruit-bearing trees with existing farming systems to enhance productivity and expand the transformative Apple Villages mission
- Enhanced Farmer Livelihoods: Diversified income through high-value fruit cultivation supports sustainable livelihoods for farming communities in one of India's most remote regions
- Soil & Water Conservation: Improves soil fertility, prevents erosion, and enhances moisture retention across Ladakh's fragile high-altitude agricultural landscapes
- Biodiversity Promotion: Encourages ecological balance by supporting native flora and fauna suited to the unique high-altitude ecosystems of Leh Ladakh
- Climate Resilience: Helps farms adapt to the extreme and changing climate conditions of the Himalayan region while improving carbon absorption and ecological stability
By supporting Project Green Leh Ladakh, you contribute to building resilient farming systems that empower farmers while restoring ecological balance in Leh Ladakh.
