About the Project
Project Pasumai Tamil Nadu is part of SankalpTaru's Sustainable Agroforestry category, aimed at
strengthening agriculture and enhancing farmer livelihoods in Tamil Nadu. Since agriculture is the main source of income for rural farmers in the state, every year they suffer crippling debts due to severe crop loss caused by an acute shortage of water during non-monsoon seasons. The situation becomes particularly grave when farmers become trapped in debt cycles for not repaying loans on time, with adversities of failed harvests pushing many to extreme despair. SankalpTaru introduced Project Pasumai Tamil Nadu to uplift farmer livelihoods by introducing agroforestry to their traditional way of farming.
Planted across farmlands and community landscapes in Tamil Nadu, this initiative promotes biodiversity while integrating a rich variety of fruit-bearing trees into the state's traditional farming systems.
Through this initiative, agroforestry-based ecosystems deliver:
- Strengthened Agriculture: Integrates diverse fruit-bearing trees with crops to enhance farm productivity and reduce dependency on rain-fed single-crop farming
